Position Summary:

We’re an international nonprofit focused on humanitarian and development work. This position will support our Communications department and will assist with writing, editing, and social media primarily focused on grant work.

Duties and Responsibilities of the Communications Specialist:

  • Supports execution of the strategic media relations plan — proofs, distributes, and pitches media materials through traditional and social media channels; helps to identify and leverage new media opportunities; and responds to media inquiries as directed
  • Draft talking points and presentation outlines for executives
  • Review program success stories and generate front page ideas
  • Has primary responsibility to assemble, produce, and send e-newsletters to subscribers
  • Writes/edits news and content for newsletters, magazine, and blog as required
  • Contributes to web and social media channels — developing and updating content as required
  • Use analytical tools such as google analytics, Buffer, Facebook Insights, etc to evaluate social media presence
  • Assists with grant writing and editing and support internal publications
  • Maintains a robust internal communications stream through the Intranet — editing, developing, posting, and updating content as required

Qualifications of the Communications Specialist:

  • Degree from a four-year college or university in English, Journalism, Communications, PR, or related field
  • Over 3 years of relevant experience in writing, media relations, communications, and/or content creation
  • Good research and media monitoring skills
  • Experience with content management systems, MS Office suite, WordPress, InDesign, Adobe Suite, HTML, and other SEO related tools
  • Ability to successful communicate across cultures and time zones
  • Strong web, blast email, and social media skills
  • Ability to produce clear, compelling written and verbal communication
  • Strong writing and editing skills, with proficiency in grammar and adherence to style guides
  • Excellent organizational skills, with attention to detail and ability to juggle multiple deadlines
  • Demonstrated ability to understand and communicate complex issues and topics
