About the Role
We are seeking a curious, driven, and versatile Multimedia Journalist to report on the people, technologies, and issues shaping defense, cybersecurity, intelligence, national security, and government technology. This is an excellent opportunity for an early-career journalist to build a portfolio, develop a professional network, and gain hands-on experience writing original stories, conducting interviews, producing video content, and covering major conferences and events.
Responsibilities
- Report, research, and write original news and feature stories covering defense, cybersecurity, technology, intelligence, and national security.
- Identify and pursue breaking news, enterprise stories, fresh story ideas, and unique angles relevant to the audience.
- Develop and maintain relationships with sources across government, military, industry, and academia.
- Conduct professional interviews with senior military leaders, government officials, industry executives, and subject matter experts.
- Record, produce, and edit video content for digital, social media, webinars, and event coverage.
- Conduct on-camera interviews in person and virtually.
- Cover conferences, industry events, and other assignments throughout the local area, with occasional out-of-area travel.
- Moderate discussions, webinars, panels, and sponsored video programs.
- Collaborate with editors and colleagues to shape coverage and support newsroom priorities.
- Fact-check information, maintain strong journalism ethics, and consistently meet deadlines in a fast-paced news environment.
- Support digital storytelling and audience engagement across multiple platforms.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Journalism preferred; degrees in Communications, English, Writing, Public Relations, or related fields will also be considered.
- Demonstrated news reporting, writing, and editing abilities through professional, internship, freelance, or campus journalism experience.
- Strong writing, interviewing, verbal communication, and storytelling skills.
- Comfortable and confident communicating with senior-level leaders and following up with sources.
- Ability to develop story leads, conduct research, fact-check information, and meet deadlines.
- Experience or familiarity with building sources and covering a specific beat is preferred.
- Ability to conduct professional on-camera interviews and familiarity with video production or editing platforms required.
- Experience with photography, podcasts, webinars, livestreams, social media, SEO, or digital storytelling is a plus.
- Interest or experience covering federal technology, defense, military operations, cybersecurity, AI, intelligence, or national security is preferred.
- Strong news judgment, professionalism, curiosity, initiative, and ability to work independently.
- Willingness to travel frequently throughout the local DMV area and occasionally outside the region.
